We value openness, collaboration, curiosity and respectful technical discussion. Whether you’re an experienced contributor or just getting started with Free Software, you’re welcome to learn alongside us.
FOSS Galaxy is a friendly collective of developers, educators and technology enthusiasts, based primarily in the United Kingdom. We develop and maintain Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), contribute to community projects, and create educational resources that help people learn, build and share software for the public good.
Free and Open Source Software
Free and Open Source Software is one of the foundations of today’s digital world. It is created collaboratively by individuals, communities, charities, universities and companies, with source code that anyone can study, modify and redistribute under open licenses.
Open source encourages collaboration, transparency and long-term sustainability. It enables people to learn from existing projects, build upon them and share improvements with others.
Many of our projects are available at no cost, but “Free” in Free Software refers to freedom rather than price. Users are free to run, study, modify and share the software, whether it is distributed commercially or not.
About FOSS Galaxy
Our community has existed for over eighteen years. Founded by students and members of existing Free Software communities as a vendor-neutral programming group, we began life as Unity Coders on the Freenode IRC network before becoming FOSS Galaxy to avoid confusion with other software with a similar name.
Over the years, we have welcomed contributors from a wide range of backgrounds, mentoring students, hobbyists and professionals as they gain experience contributing to Free Software. Today, many of our active members work in software engineering, higher education and research, while others enjoy contributing to open technologies in their spare time, with opportunities to learn, grow and take part in meaningful work.
As a community-run collective, we provide independent hosting and infrastructure for our members, favouring Free and Open Source alternatives wherever practical. This gives contributors space to develop, collaborate and showcase their work without relying entirely on large commercial platforms.
From time to time, we also undertake bespoke software development and technical projects where our expertise can make a difference. The experience gained through these projects often feeds back into our educational resources, research and the Free Software projects we maintain, linking our project work to our wider community activity.
Community-run infrastructure
We believe communities should have control over the tools they depend on. FOSS Galaxy maintains its own services using Free and Open Source Software, giving members a place to collaborate, experiment and learn, and reinforcing the value of community-run infrastructure.
